My name is Derrick Hoard and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist and survivor of religious trauma. You won't be shamed here.
Religious Trauma Syndrome is a condition characterized by the loss of a sense of self following deconstruction from an organized religion. While society often acknowledges the struggle of leaving certain religions, others, like Christianity, are so deeply entrenched in our culture that finding a safe space to discuss your suffering can be challenging. Many therapists view spirituality and religion as protective factors, making it difficult to find the right support.
Understanding Your Struggle:
I understand how difficult it can be to break free from the grip of religion. Having grown up as an evangelical Pentecostal Christian, I know firsthand the cycle of guilt and shame that these beliefs can create. Recognizing Religious Trauma:
Religious trauma can mimic many other mental illnesses. You might experience:
You're Not Alone:
You are not crazy, and you are not alone. Many people experience these feelings, and it’s a natural response to the conditioning you’ve undergone. The fear, guilt, and shame you feel are not your fault; they are the result of deeply ingrained beliefs that you were taught from a young age.
My Commitment to You: I will confidentially help you let go of the conditioning responsible for your pain. Together, we will work to undo these beliefs and free you to enjoy life without guilt, shame, or constant fear.
