"Life Coach" is not a license. It is a title, like "stupid idiot". Anyone can call themselves a "stupid idiot", but it takes a special kind of idiot to do so and also charge you for it. " Life coach" is an unregulated title that anyone can have. It requires no training, no school, and no background checks. No wonder so many narcissists are drawn to it. Also, you can be a life coach if you wanted. Just declare it. Right now.
Unless you’re 85 years old, how do you have enough experience in life to coach someone on life? No, what life coaches do is take the fact that they have overcome one adversity in their lives and then use this one triumph as "proof" that they can help others. I always find it funny though, if you are so good at coaching, why couldn't you coach yourself to a credential that matters? Life coaches may have "experience", but it doesn't matter how long you have been "driving a car" if you are lost in the desert with no map, you are still lost. This is what life coaches are, just lost people trying to get rich helping emotionally vulnerable people.
Of all the lies that life coaches tell, this is the biggest and fattest. It also showcases their ignorance because it just flat out isn't true. Therapy can have a past focus, but therapy is not just focused on the past. If they can't tell the difference between that, how can they tell the difference between "depression" and "just feeling sad". They can't. "Therapy is Focused On The Past" is an idiotic marketing phrase that makes sense if you don't think about it. My therapy sessions often involve clients discussing what happened "last week" not "20 years ago". These idiots need a reason to exist and this is the biggest lie they tell.
If I as a therapist do something unethical, you can report it to my licensing board. If a coach does something unethical "sleeping with a client" who are you gonna tell? Yelp? There is the international coaching federation, but it's nothing more than a group of unqualified people leading other unqualified people. You can’t take away a title like "life coach". Ask the Sexual Assault Survivors of Tony Robbins. He is STILL making money even though he has had several credible allegations of abuse. Life Coaching is a Cult.
Below, I will leave some links to my youtube channel so you can see that this isn't true. The reason life coaches even have a footing is because of Tony Robbins, Oprah Winfrey, and my professions long history of elitism. As a neurodiverse therapist who has also been through significant trauma, I realize that most therapists seem to be focused on the past, however, the past simply informs the present. I believe the present is where the work lies. I often coach my clients through conversations, situations, and even relationships. The idea that all therapists are the same is another lie used to sell you their services.
My name is Derrick Hoard and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. Yes, I know the colored hair and makeup is different, but hey all therapists ARE NOT the same. I went to school for 8 years and went through hours of training and supervision to bring you ethical therapy services. The problem is that life coaches are not ethical and will lie to you. Here are 5 lies that life-coaches tell and the truth surrounding them.
