My name is Derrick Hoard and I am an ADHD Coach with 7+ years of experience as a therapist a unique and relatable approach to ADHD Coaching. I have personal (frustrating) experience in dealing with ADHD and a personality that sets me apart, I am here to help you move past simply understanding ADHD change the way you approach it so the changes stick. Although this is not therapy, here is a link to my psychology today profile.
Do you find yourself easily distracted and struggling to focus on tasks? Do you have a hard time completing assignments and meeting deadlines? Are you feeling like your ADHD is holding you back in your career and relationships? Are you tired of procrastinating on important work and then feeling the wave of guilt after you spend hours on tik tok, social media, or anything else other than what you are supposed to be doing? You're not alone. ADHD can make daily life a challenge and cause feelings of frustration, overwhelm, and self-doubt.
In my 7 years as a therapist, I have worked with many people who had an official or unofficial diagnosis of ADHD. They often came to me as a last resort after previous therapy left them with an understanding of their problems but no actual solutions. They knew why they behaved the way they did, but didn't know how to change it. Medication was of little help too. Although it provided the "boost" they needed to have the energy to get things done, it did not provide them with the motivation nor the direction that they needed. They were stuck in a limbo of insight with no action.
My approach is based on a very simple idea. The problem is the problem, not the person. We are all doing the best we can with the knowledge that we have to solve the problems in our lives. With ADHD it is usually problems related to getting started, staying consistent, and following through. Not to mention procrastination and feeling like you aren't living up to your full potential. There are many things that people try to solve this problem, but they mostly all involve forcing themselves to power through using their willpower.
And if at first you don't succeed, try, try again. However, what if the problem is the way that you are trying? Continuing to try in that same way is going to lead to the same results. But as I said earlier we are already doing our best. How can you do better if you don't know what better is?
As a traditional therapist, my job was to provide guidance, support, and insight into my client's behaviors, but strictly forbidden from giving them direction. While some people were able to find their way, many were left confused and frustrated. A calendar, notebook, and routine mean nothing without direction on how to use them. So I decided to do something different. I began to offer my clients actual direction and coaching on what specific steps to take, I had to shift my thinking from the cause of their ADHD symptoms being chemical imbalances and traumas to the ways that they were doing the best they could to handle their problems.
In essence, I began to coach them through their day to day lives with ADHD.
And I begin to see rapid improvements.
Now, some solutions required helping my clients find a reason to continue doing what they were doing, some ended up switching careers, and some completely restructuring their entire lives. But, it wasn't difficult because not only did they have insight, they now had reasons to act on it. This is ADHD Coaching modernized.
When do you want to solve this for good? No more band-aids, no more sweeping it under the rug, no more running away. Just simply dealing with it head on and then living free of unnecessary anxiety for the rest of your life.
