Talking About Caffeine Withdrawal Syndrome
My name is Derrick Javan Hoard and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in brief-oriented cognitive behavioral therapy and adjustment disorders. I have been using caffeine my entire life. One day, I decided to just stop cold-turkey. I was always told that caffeine is not as harmful as other drugs and while I expected a headache, I wasn't ready for the complex syndrome I developed as a result of my cessation.
I have switched my practice to a fully online format. I use a secure encrypted peer to peer video conferencing service to ensure your confidentiality [not Zoom]. I have been doing teletherapy for the past five years, and know what it takes to establish good therapeutic rapport. You can also check out my youtube channel for more updates as well as an example of how therapy will look and sound.
Caffeine Withdrawl Syndrome is a diagnosable syndrome, included in the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, that arises from the experience of abrupt or gradual caffeine cessation. You do not need to be a heavy coffee drinker to develop this syndrome. The problem is that most people underestimate their coffee consumption and often attribute their symptoms to some other medical illness.
The choice to cut back or quit caffeine consumption is a deeply personal one. Living in a city where caffeine consumption is reinforced on a daily basis, it can be difficult to find the support you need. The physical symptoms can often be managed with over the counter medication, supplements, and rest. However, the mental symptoms can be mismanaged and lead to the development of the syndrome. For example, one of the symptoms of caffeine cessation is Anxiety. Anxiety can also be caused internally from one's own thought processes. For example, what if you got anxious because you anticipated anxiety from caffeine cessation? It becomes a nasty vicious cycle. As your therapist, I will educate you more on the syndrome as well as provide you with tools for the journey you are on.
