My name is Derrick Hoard and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. I also have a very successful social media presence through both my Youtube channel and tiktok accounts at The Situational Therapist.
I recently gave a presentation to the Seattle Counselors Association concerning microaggressions in therapy. It can be found at this link. As I was doing research for this presentation, I was shocked to find that the field of counseling doesn't even recognize that microaggressions occur and believes that there is "no way to define them" and that it "makes a hostile work environment for therapists". Yes, but what about the clients those therapists are seeing? The video I made proved that systemic racism is alive and well in the counseling profession. And the consequences include misdiagnosis, worsening of symptoms, and for some institutionalization.
The counseling profession is about 90% white and mostly female. You cannot find a black therapist because the profession was not made intending to create black therapists and even when we do make it, we are often relegated to support roles or told to "lower our fees" to "help out our community". We simply struggle to survive and create spaces for ourselves. Thankfully, through a little bit of hard work and a lot of luck, I have been able to create a thriving private practice.
If you have viewed my Tik-Tok profile or seen any of my content, you know that I am a strong opponent of corporeal punishment, also known as "spanking". I am sorry, but you did not turn out fine. If you were "spanked, popped, tapped" (all of which are synonyms for hitting), then that had a profound effect on how you exist in the world.
The side effects of this type of child-rearing are legion and include:
Many black people come to therapy wondering what is wrong with them. Well, pick from below:
Therapy with me is focused on helping you reach the goals you set for yourself in therapy.
I am less concerned with "diagnosing mental illness" and more concerned with "talking with my client about their difficult situation".

The anxiety or depression is the symptom, the problem is the situation. The reason you keep getting into these same anxiety producing or depression inducing situations is that corporeal punishment has left both visible and invisible scars on your body and psyche respectively.
My hourly rate is $350 per hour and I do not accept insurance. You may still use your insurance benefits, but you will need to check with your insurance company to see how much they will reimburse for out of network coverage. Depending on your reimbursement, therapy may only cost $100 to $200 after your insurance company pays you. I do offer financial scholarships for those who ask. It is your responsibility to ask me during our free consultation. I am also starting group classes which may be another low cost option as well.
I offer all my clients a free 15-minute consultation to ask me any questions they may have and for me to ask questions as well. The most important thing is that we "fit" together therapeutically. Please click the link below to get started and lets heal this intergenerational trauma together.
