My name is Derrick Hoard and I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. I also have a very successful social media presence through both my Youtube channel and tiktok accounts at The Situational Therapist.
While I can be of service to any individuals who consider themselves black. My specialty is in working with individuals who grew up hearing that they were not "black enough". These are individuals who have been made fun of, by members of their own community, for not conforming to arbitrary standards of blackness.
They may have dressed differently, listened to different music, or spoken in ways that were not considered black.
This type of bullying can have devastating effects and result in various mental health concerns including, but not limited to,
Not to mention that some studies show that almost 90% of black people were hit as children and had it called discipline. Spanking is Abuse and causes harm that is well documented. This is yet another issue that can cause division between a black person and their community.
And finally, while as a therapist I respect all faiths, I would be remiss if I did not discuss the loneliness of being a non-religious black person. The black church has played such an integral role in the lives of black Americans. As such, we can be blind to the harms of strict adherence to a dogmatic belief system and if you grew up hearing people speak in tongues, then there are some things you might need to hear.
Many black people come to therapy wondering what is wrong with them, but the very fact that they are willing to seek therapy in the face of a cultural taboo against it is a clue that perhaps they come from a dysfunctional family. Working with me I will be respectful of where you come from and help you move to where you want to be.
I recently gave a presentation to the Seattle Counselors Association concerning microaggressions in therapy. It can be found at this link. As I was doing research for this presentation, I was shocked to find that the field of counseling doesn't even recognize that microaggressions occur and believes that there is "no way to define them" and that it "makes a hostile work environment for therapists". Yes, but what about the clients those therapists are seeing? The video I made proved that systemic racism is alive and well in the counseling profession. And the consequences include misdiagnosis, worsening of symptoms, and for some institutionalization.
My hourly rate is $350 per hour and I do not accept insurance directly. You may still use your insurance benefits, but you will need to check with your insurance company to see how much they will reimburse for out-of-network coverage. Depending on your reimbursement, therapy may only cost $100 to $200 after your insurance company pays you. I do have financial scholarships covering up to 50% of the cost of therapy for those who ask. It is your responsibility to ask me during our free consultation. It doesn't matter what type of work you do, if you need the scholarship just ask.
I offer all my clients a free 15-minute consultation to ask me any questions they may have and for me to ask questions as well. The most important thing is that we "fit" together therapeutically. Please click the link below to get started and lets heal this intergenerational trauma together.
